Ayindisa Basket Weavers
Ayindisa basket weaving co-operative originates from the Frafra language and represents the people and culture of the Gurunsi people. Natural grass baskets are hand-woven by the indigenous women of northern Ghana.
Beginning in 2007, with five women, this co-operative now employs over thirty women and some men in the village of Yarkibisi near Bolgatanga , which is not fertile and agriculture can prove difficult. Sporadic rainfall and harsh weather conditions force the women to supplement their families’ income with basket weaving. Weaving has been a traditional skill of these people for many years. The indigenous women of northern Ghana exclusively weave Ayindisa’s African baskets.
An effort to provide employment for disadvantaged women is the central concept of our basket weaving co-operative. Currently, we are working with the weavers to also build a new work shelter and are seeking tax-deductable donations to build a shallow well that will provide clean drinking water for the entire village. We also provide marketing information in order to meet the growing needs of the group. This type of social development promotes self-esteem, which has a trickle-down effect on the entire village.
